Let’s take a look at why exercise before surgery is also important for your recovery.
“A patient’s commitment to recover, even before surgery takes place, is a large factor in a successful recovery,” according to Vonda Wright, MD, assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Sports Medicine.
In-patient rehabilitation reduced by 73 percent
Medical studies featured in an article in Fitness and Wellness news, focused on knee- and hip-replacement surgery patients in Boston who participated in six weeks of pre-surgery workouts. The sessions included aquatic and land-based strength training, and aerobic and flexibility exercises. These participants reduced their chances of needing in-patient rehabilitation by 73 percent.
Increase function and decrease pain BEFORE surgery
A pre-surgery routine will help you develop stronger muscles and support your bone health. This will improve function, reduce stiffness, and reduce pain prior to your procedure.
Go home sooner AFTER surgery
Before being safely discharged from the hospital, there are requirements you need to accomplish. These may include walking a certain length, ascending/descending two or more stairs, and independently using the bathroom. Participating in an exercise program before surgery can help you reach those requirements more quickly.
A few tips to get started courtesy of Fitnessandwellnessnews.com
– Begin an exercise routine at least six weeks prior to your surgery.
– If you’re new to exercise, start slowly. We have fitness specialists available that can help you get started.
– If you currently have an exercise routine, consider increasing your workout’s intensity, duration, or frequency.
– Consider joining a yoga class. This can help prepare your mind and body for surgery through relaxation techniques and soothing movements.
